Patricia "Patty" Reed Wins School Board Election

Announced on: Wednesday, November 04, 2009

FAIRGRADE congratulates FAIRGRADE supporter and engaged volunteer Patricia “Patty” Reed on her resounding win for School Board in the Providence District yesterday.

Reed ran a positive, high-energy campaign that focused on issues that are most important to parents, teachers and taxpayers including:  protecting class size, a review of administrative spending priorities, competitive pay for teachers, getting kids and teachers out of trailers and restoring public confidence through improved relations between the School Board and the community.

FAIRGRADE has consistently advocated that Fairfax County Public Schools officials work more closely with the community.  Upon close examination of the precinct results from yesterday’s election, the message is clear:  Parents, teachers and taxpayers want leadership that values their input.

In nine Providence precincts, people who voted Deeds for Governor, crossed party lines in significant numbers to vote for Patty Reed - the candidate who focused on parent and community concerns.  The election results, 48% Reed, 10% DiCarlo and 41% Jennison – clearly reflect the public’s preference for this message over Jennison’s partisan focus.

Reed’s election to the School Board yesterday is evidence that “parent advocacy” – when activated and organized – can have a positive impact in School Board elections.

We wish Patty Reed great success on the School Board.  She joins the Board at a time when FCPS is faced with difficult and potentially painful budget decisions.  As parent advocates, we are confident that Patty’s 20+ years experience in budgeting and contracting will be a significant contribution to the School Board’s discussions, as will her commitment to an open dialogue with all stakeholders.
